Ensuring Workplace Safety:
Reducing Manual Handling Injuries
As an employer, it is your responsibility to safeguard your employees from the possibility of manual handling injuries at work. While good handling technique is an important factor, it should not be relied upon solely to mitigate risk. Implementing additional measures such as providing lifting aids and improving task execution, load management, or working environment will also play a crucial role in reducing workplace injuries.
But if you HAVE to lift, here are some guidelines
Safe lifting techniques include:
- Positioning: Stand as close to the load as possible. Place your feet shoulder-width apart with one foot slightly ahead of the other.
- Posture: Keep your head up and straight with your shoulders back to keep your back straight. Tuck your chin in.
- Movement: Bend at the hips and knees only until you're deep in a squatting position. Keep your elbows and arms close to your body. Tighten your stomach muscles.
- Grip: Take a full grip, using palms, not fingertips.
- Load: Keep the load close and centered in front of you. Keep the load close to your waist for as long as possible while lifting. Keep the heaviest side of the load next to your body.
- Lifting: Get a good handhold and do not twist while lifting. Lift smoothly.
